The final day's racing brought full on conditions with a strong south westerly gusting into the mid 20's. The RO and his team set a good sized windward leeward and the fleet got away into a proper heavy-weather beat. A tight group rounded the top mark with Martin Browne and Al Hall featuring, everybody was fully lit up on the downwinds and as speeding D One's approached the port lay line it was becoming a case of 'who gybes wins'!
It wasn't long before normal service was resumed and Nick found his way to the front to take his 6th bullet – 1 to go for 7 straight. Al Hall had his best result of the week with Giles grabbing 3rd on the line as Martin Browne and Humphrey Carter dealt with various management issues!
The wind increased for the final race and conditions were now at the upper limit with virtually nobody else left on the bay. Nick clearly had a mainsheet problem but was still cruising upwind alarmingly quickly! Chris Sallis rounded first and set his kite for a blistering run out to the lay-line followed by Nick, Dave Gorringe and Giles.
As the race went on Dave and Giles pulled through and Nick had an uncharacteristic capsize whilst gybing in a massive gust. By the finish Dave had won taking the 'Lymington honour' with Giles second and Chris third.
GBR: D-Ones at Lymington Regatta
The D-One fleet descended on Lymington Regatta, hosted by the Royal Lymington Yacht Club and shared with Lymington Town SC.
Saturday dawned with a slightly overcast weather and light winds. The Sea Breeze was to be delayed until much later in the day, which gave some interesting results in the first two races.
Race 1, local lad Giles Chipperfield showed the fleet the way round the course closely followed by Tim Garvin and Terry Brooks. Places were changing regularly and the racing was extremely close, as appears to be the norm for this class.
Race 2, saw the fleet set off in a dwindling wind as the sea breeze was trying hard to come through. Chipperfield was clear ahead closely followed by Paul Birbeck. Garvin managed to overtake Birbeck on the second lap and got close to Chipperfield when the breeze completely died off and the race was cancelled. Results being taken from the previous lap.
Race 3, was sailed in a building sea breeze and was best race of the day. Chipperfield got off to a great start but he didn’t have it all his way as Garvin and Brooks were permanently challenging throughout the whole race. As the breeze built to a considerable speed Chipperfield managed a capsize at the final leeward mark to let Garvin in for the win, closely followed by Brooks, and Dave Gorringe, showing his turn of speed in the windy stuff.
After a long day on the water, tea and doughnuts were waiting, and afterwards the fleet adjourned to the bar where the food and drink was most welcome.....as was an early bed!
GBR: 2017 National Championships, Gorleston
When witnessing a masterclass in championship fleet sailing one can either simply ‘Wow !’ or look for those very few fleeting moments which might be criticised; Nick Craig discarded a ‘first’ in the three-day, seven-race series run at Gorleston this last weekend, while just tuning up his brand-new D-One.
But that didn't stop everyone else having a fantastic time with every type of weather, tight racing and varied results. Gorleston beach added its own traditional brand of excitement when the breeze came up, and the club's hospitality and welcome were quite extraordinary.
Many thanks from the D-One fleet to virtually the entire GYGSC membership who helped us out.Read more for results and details...
GBR: D-Ones at Lymington Regatta
A select group of D1’s joined the 2 local boats to contest the next round of the traveller’s circuit held within the fast fleet of the Lymington regatta.
Saturday morning was a bit of a shock as boats were rigged in drizzle but this soon cleared as launch time approached, conditions were somewhat lively on the way to the start line with that awkward chop you only seem to get on the Solent.
Race 1 & sharing a start line with RS800’s, 700’s & other assorted skiffs and trapeze boats made finding clear air a priority, something that Locals Dave Gorringe & Giles Chipperfield made look easy as they battled their way up the first beat, followed Tyler Harmsworth and Sat Nav (Tim Garvin) rounded together with Paul Birbeck on their transoms.
