The fleet enjoyed 2 races on Day 1 in a 15knt northerly Pela wind. Mario Rabbo ITA and Tomai Balazs HUN made the break away with Mario winning and Nick Craig GBR moving up to second after Tomai made a mistake at the finish. The wind was shifting more for the second race and the first beat saw gains and losses on either side. This time Nick and Mario moved ahead with Nick taking the bullet and Mario second. Tim Garvin GBR rounded out the top 3. With close racing throughout the fleet and some classic Lake Garda down wind rides everyone returned to shore to share their stories from the day over a beer and a plate of pasta at the club.
Day 2 of the Gold Cup was an early start to make the most of the strong northerly Pela wind. Today's races developed into a battle between the current champion Nick Craig and the Italian champion Mario Rabbo with Nick taking a 3,1 and Mario a 1,2 putting them level on points and setting things up nicely for the final day tomorrow. European champion Tomai Balazs moved up to 3rd after a good day with Chris Salliis and Beppe Pontremoli rounding out the top 5. After racing the annual meeting was held and plans made for events in Hungary next May and Italy next Autumn.
The final 2 races of the 2016 Gold Cup were sailed in a strong and shifting northerly, in race one the fleet split with the Torbole side paying and big gains and losses downwind in the bands of pressure. Nick Craig won, with Mario Rabbo second and Tomai Balazs 3rd. The final race was a show down for the Gold Cup between Nick and Mario. At a shortened finish Tamas Szamody HUN was first with Mario second and Nick 3rd. This left Mario and Nick equal on points with Mario winning the Gold Cup on count back. Tamas moved up to 4th overall and Chris Sallis rounded out the top 5 and won the Masters trophy.
With a fleet of 25 D-Ones from 6 nations and close racing throughout the fleet the 2016 Gold cup was a memorable event with everyone looking forward to meeting again in Hungary next May.
